A Multiple Approach

Why I draw and perform:

I draw to see and share. I draw characters and their lives. Currently, this character is a half-man, half-fox creature. Through these drawings I evoke an intimate moment, a poetic look, trying to capture or relive a moment or a feeling. The small format of these drawings forces the viewer to be alone in front of the drawing. We are alone when we read a poem. These drawings are made on a daily basis in notebooks.

My performances, which come from the tradition of storytelling in Ireland, produce a ritualised experience for the public (Halloween performance, Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris, 2015), as I conceive of a drawing in time. I am currently developing a formal practice of drawing around gesture at the frontiers of the figurative, I try to ensure that the composition of the drawing is motivated by the feeling of a situation or the fruit of a thought.

The collective and participative exhibition Le Dessein, (Cinémorphe, Paris, 2018) that I curated with Julie Borgeaud, demonstrated the power of the imagination to bring certain visions into existence. It is a way for me to project hopes or demonstrate ideas of self-assertion. The following year, a participatory exhibition with a parade for the city of Brest for which I was the winning artist, (La Fête de Retour de Canot, 2019, Maison de la Fontaine, Brest), showed and experienced the power of each person's imagination.

Practising different modes of transmission, including teaching, I wish to organise workshops with different publics around activities like drawing, writing, music and performance, as I did for the exhibition Fable Lab alongside the Franco-Chilean artist Ramuntcho Matta (le Silo U1, Château- Thierry, 2021).

“Of Irish origin and a graduate of ENSAPC art school, he lives in Paris and teaches at the EESAB art school in Brest. For the past twenty years, he has been developing a prolific body of work that is embodied in drawing, writing and performance. He is also a lyricist, singer and trumpet player in various groups that have several albums to their credit.”
